Primer Products

Vihtavuori is expanding its expertise with the launch of primer production at our newly built primer factory in Vihtavuori, Finland. Located next to Finland’s only propellant factory, the new facility represents a major investment in reliability, security of supply, and modern manufacturing technology.

Vihtavuori - Primers

Built for reliability and security of supply

The Vihtavuori primer factory is the only primer manufacturing facility in the Nordic countries. With a total investment of approximately 47 million euros, the factory features fully modern, highly automated production processes designed to meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and consistency.

In recent years, global shortages have highlighted the importance of reliable primer availability. With in-house primer production, Vihtavuori is strengthening supply security for Nammo’s ammunition factories in Finland, Europe, and the United States, while also supporting customers beyond the Nammo Group.

Primer production is a key element of Finland’s national security of supply, with the Finnish Defence Forces as our most important customer. Producing this critical ammunition component domestically ensures long-term availability for small caliber ammunition.

Production capacity and product score

Once fully operational, the factory will produce approximately 400 million primers annually. Initial production will focus on 7.62 and 5.56 caliber rifle primers emphasizing successful product development and safe packaging.

Vihtavuori primers will be used internally within Nammo’s global ammunition operations. In addition, primers will be supplied to external customers and the reloading market, supporting both industrial and civilian demand.

Expertise rooted in Vihtavuori

Primer production is not new to Vihtavuori – primers were previously manufactured at the site until the early 2000s. The new factory is combining decades of know-how with modern manufacturing processes, automation and excellence.

Detailed product specifications and availability information will be published closer to the start of commercial deliveries.
